Community Planning

Shaping the future – have your say in community planning

Community PlanningCommunity Planning came into operation on 1st April 2015 as part of the full implementation of local government reform.

Community planning is one of the new responsibilities of local government and it requires a council ‘… to initiate, maintain, facilitate and participate in community planning for its district’. The council is the lead partner and is required to put in place a process where it works with bodies to develop and implement a shared vision for promoting the well-being of its area, community cohesion and improving the quality of life of its citizens

It is the responsibility of the councils to ensure that the needs of citizens are understood and are considered during the formulation and review of the community plan. The councils should actively encourage local people and organisations to become involved in the community planning process.

In each Council area the Community Planning Partnership produce a draft community plan which is then open for consultation. Consultation can take the form of Public Engagement meetings, online questionnaires etc.

The integrated education movement now has an invaluable opportunity to make its voice heard. If you would like to see an integrated society and better educational provision for your children we would encourage you to get involved and be included in the process.

Because this process is not uniform across all 11 Councils we have done some of the legwork and pulled together a short guide to how you can engage with each of the Councils currently seeking involvement or feedback.

Some Councils are intending to start their consultation process over the next few months. Information about these will be added as it becomes available
