Basic Statistics of Annual Enrolments at grant-aided schools 2017/18 published

The Department of Education has today published a statistical release which details the basic provisional enrolment figures for schools and for children in funded pre-school education for 2017/18.

The data is taken from the school enrolments census which was conducted in October 2017.

Data collected through the school census exercise is used to inform Departmental policy development, implementation and evaluation.

This first release of the basic statistics contains information which is used in the process to allocate funding to schools. A further statistical release, containing a more detailed set of tables, will be published in February 2018. (more…)

Chief Executives welcome new official guide for schools wishing to become integrated

The Chief Executives of the Integrated Education Fund (IEF) and of the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education (NICIE) welcome the publication of Integration Works, the Department of Education’s guidance for schools on becoming formally integrated. Integration is available to nearly every school in Northern Ireland, and the official process of becoming integrated is termed “transformation”.  The DE document offers advice and encouragement to schools considering this option. Primary schools in Northern Ireland continue to rank among the best in the world in reading

A major international survey of pupil achievement in reading shows that Northern Ireland pupils aged 9 -10 are amongst the best readers in the world.

Data from the 2016 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) published today reveals that children in only two of the 50 countries, Singapore and Russia, performed better than local pupils in the international reading study. (more…)

Applying for a school place

How to apply for a primary school place
If you are applying for a first year place at a primary school in Northern Ireland, you need to get a form from the Education Authority (EA) in your region. You will be asked for a list of your preferred schools.

You should name at least four primary schools in order of preference. In some areas it would be recommended to list more than four – for example, where schools tend to get more applications than they have places available. (more…)

Living prizes get primary schools planting at Allianz Scarecrow Awards

This year’s prize ceremony for the Allianz scarecrow contest saw integrated primary school pupils getting their hands dirty at the agricultural college in Antrim. Representatives of the classes which had won prizes at the annual Garden Show Ireland earlier this year travelled to the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) Greenmount Campus on Friday (24 November). They were awarded saplings to take back to school.

Colourful creations from the children formed “Scarecrow Avenue” at Antrim Castle Gardens in May. The competition, for integrated primary schools all over Northern Ireland, is sponsored by Allianz and co-ordinated by the Integrated Education Fund (IEF). (more…)

Schools launch video to promote integrated campus for Omagh families

Omagh Integrated Primary School and Drumragh Integrated College have launched a website and video to showcase their exciting new partnership which will deliver an integrated campus for pupils from pre-school to A-level. The building work will be finished next summer, with Omagh IPS, nursery and playgroup children moving into their new facilities for the autumn term 2018.  (more…)
