Report on Sharing Published

The Fund welcomes the publication of the report by the Ministerial Advisory Group on Shared Education as a valuable contribution to the debate on the future of schools in Northern Ireland. However there is disappointment in the integrated education movement that integrated schools are dismissed in the report as not providing a model for advancing shared education. The authors do however say that parental demand for schools of any type or ethos should be met. (more…)

Hazelwood Integrated College wins NI Rock Challenge

Congratulations to Hazelwood Integrated
College on winning NI Rock Challenge, and making history by becoming NI Champions in the Be Your Best Global Rock Challenge for the second time. They will now go on to represent Northern Ireland at the UK Finals in June.

Rock Challenge is a worldwide event in countries such as Australia, Japan, America and Europe and is the UK’s most popular youth culture event. The Rock Challenge is a 100% drug and alcohol free experience aimed at 11-18 year olds where young people are encouraged to be their best.

Hazelwood swept the board at the Waterfront Hall with awards for Best Stage Crew, Best Make Up, Best Set Design, Performers Choice Award, Spirit of Rock Challenge Award, Healthy Lifestyle Award, Community Support Award as well as the Overall Winner.

Integrated education motion defeated at Stormont

The pro-integration motion below, tabled by the Alliance Party’s Trevor Lunn and Chris Lyttle, called for the Education Minister to do more to promote the integrated sector has been defeated at Stormont.

Alliance Motion: That this Assembly calls on the Minister of Education to acknowledge the expressed wish of parents to see their children educated in an integrated setting; to honour his Department’s obligation to encourage and facilitate integrated education where demand exists; to make integration of controlled and maintained schools a specific objective of area planning; and to work, in particular with the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education and the Integrated Education Fund, to ease the process of the transformation of existing schools to integrated status. Primary Area Plans Published

The Education Boards have published their proposals for rationalising the primary schools estate in Northern Ireland. In the face of economic constraints and with thousands of empty desks, the Boards have been asked by the Education Minister to formulate area-based plans on how best to deliver education. (more…)
