Peter Weir continues to invest in Early Years Pathway Fund

Education Minister, Peter Weir, has announced new arrangements for the Early Years Pathway Fund.

The Pathway Fund replaced the Early Years Fund from April 2016 and is administered by Early Years – the organisation for Young Children (EYO). The Pathway Fund prioritises support in areas of disadvantage where there is little or no provision. (more…)

New Permanent Secretary for Department of Education

The Department of Education has announced that Derek Baker is to be the new Permanent Secretary.

Derek Baker has 36 years’ experience in the Northern Ireland Civil Service.  From May 2016 he has served as Deputy Secretary in the Department for the Economy; prior to this he was acting Permanent Secretary in the Department for Employment and Learning from June 2013.  He will take up post in the Department of Education on 27 February 2017. Education Minister works to develop a single transfer test.

Education Minister Peter Weir has appointed an academic from Durham University to explore a common transfer test for primary school leavers in Northern Ireland.  Mr Weir has previously told the DUP Party conference at the weekend (29 October) that he was working with the current test paper providers to see if a common examination could be agreed, rather than imposed by the government.
