This programme is to help introduce new sports to provide opportunities for pupils to experience sports normally associated with just one cultural tradition in Northern Ireland.

Applications OPEN Monday 02 March 2026 and CLOSE Friday 17 April 2026.
Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application prior to the end of June 2026.
The Integration through Sport Programme supports Integrated schools to introduce new or recently trialled/implemented sports, providing pupils with opportunities to experience sports traditionally associated with just one cultural tradition in Northern Ireland. Eligible sports include Hockey, Hurling, Camogie, Cricket, GAA Football, Handball and Rugby. The programme aims to broaden cultural sporting experiences, promote participation across traditions, and strengthen integration through shared physical activity.
Schools are encouraged to apply for activities that link with local sporting organisations and for initiatives that support progress towards an Excellence in Integrated Education Award (EIEA).
Funding Available
The total amount of funding available for the programme is limited, therefore the number of grants that the IEF can award is also restricted:
- Integrated Primary Schools may apply for up to £1,500.
- Integrated Colleges may apply for up to £3,000.
Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate that the sport is either new to the school or has been recently trialled, outline plans for its further development, and explain how it will be delivered within the school day.
Guidance
A maximum of £229 per day for sub-cover/teacher costs and single resource items over a value of £100 will not be funded unless specifically requested at application stage. Unapproved changes to any approved grant may not be reimbursed unless prior approval is provided by the IEF.
